Window and siding installation detailing, and where failures begin

The part of the job that decides whether a material performs the way its data sheet says: fastening, expansion, flashing order, sealing cut ends, weep paths and hardware adjustment, plus the seasonal service that keeps it all working. It is the largest category on purpose, because it is where the failures we get called out to actually begin.

Where to start

Three write-ups to read first

Where a step comes from a manufacturer’s installation instructions, the write-up says whose instructions they are. Where it is a building department requirement, the department is named. If you are new to the category, start with these three.

Installation detailing: 16 write-ups

All sixteen installation detailing write-ups

Each write-up sits in this category and no other. The summary under each title is the one the write-up carries itself; the date is the last time its text changed.

From reading to an estimate

When the detail is the job

Every opening is measured before anything is quoted, and the estimate names the line, the series and the glass package. The installation side of each trade is on the replacement windows page, the siding page and the patio and entry door page. Enlarging an opening or adding a new one is its own job: see cut-ins and new openings.

The other two categories

Faster than reading

Or just describe the wall and let us answer it

The blog is here because most of these questions come up before anyone calls. If yours is already at the "what do I do about it" stage, a measure visit answers it faster than any write-up will.

The shop line is (775) 391-8487, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
